Life as a Business Owner
Lashonda Brown is a business owner of FME Solution. FME Solution is a store where you can buy phones, pay your phone bill , pay car insurance, purchase cases, etcetera. FME Solution has been open for about eight months now, and the business is going really well. Lashonda and her husband (Jermaine Brown) work at the shop together. Lashonda Brown works morning time from 10:00am to 5:00pm and, her husband works at night from 5:00pm to 9:30pm.
Before Lashonda started her own business at FME solution she got laid off from her job First Data which she has been working there for about 8 in a half years. When Lashonda got laid off she decided it was time to own something of her own, so she decided to open up her own store with her husband. Lashonda began taking the classes and studying the things she needed to know to own her own business and how to pay bills or western union. I recently interviewed Lashonda Brown(my mom) and asked her questions about her job.
Q. What interest you about your job? What interests me about my job is that I'm able to have my own business and hours.
Q.What is your greatest strength? My greatest strength would have to be being able to learn new things just by listening.
Q.What do you find difficult? I don’t like not being able to meet my customer’s needs.
Q.Can you work under pressure? Yes.
Q.How do you respond to change?I respond to change really well because I just adapt myself to the situation.
Q.What types of training does your company offer? The type of training we offer are Finance, Marketing, Sales, buying. administration and personnel business skills.
Q. How do you define success as a business owner? Success as a business owner for me is not about how much money you make, but being able to accomplish what you started and being happy with it.
Q.What are your goals for the company in the next 3-5 years?My goal for the company in the next 3-5 years is to have 2 or more locations.
Q.Do you have any employees? No we do not have any employees yet.
Q.How did you get started in this experiment? I got started in this experiment because I got laid off from my job that I was at for about 8 in a half years, so I decided to start my own business and work for myself.
Q.How do you market your business? I marketed my business by social media, and passing out flyers.
Q.Where do you see your career in the next year? In the next year, I hope to start incorporating new things for the shop.
Q.Why is your business located at this site? My business is located at this site because the community had nothing there like it.
Q.Can you describe your customers? My customers are like average, working people.
Q.What are your biggest issues for running your shop? My biggest challenges for running my shop wouldl have to be competition.
Q.What is your typical schedule? My typical schedule is Monday through Saturdays.

After my interview with Lashonda Brown, I learned a lot of fascinating things about being a business owner such as the pros and cons, and what the day to day is really like for a business owner. I got the impression that being a business owner requires you to be very focused and hard-working. Also, it's not that easy, so I respect all the business owners that have taken a risk by quitting their jobs and going out on their own. This interview inspired me to have my own business because no one can fire me and I get to make the rules.

- No one can fire you.
- You control every aspect of the business.
- You work directly with the customers and see what they need first hand.

- You have to take large financial risk.
- You have to work long hours and may have fewer opportunities for vacation.
- There may be times when don't have customers.
- You have to take a lot of classes and learn new things which can be very time consuming.
